Suite française

Irène Némirovsky died of typhus in Auschwitz in 1942. The book she left behind was preserved in manuscript form by her daughter and is the first two parts of an epic account of the fall of France and the start of the Nazi occupation. When it was finally published in France in 2004, Suite Française was ecstatically received by French critics, and reawakened the controversy around wartime collaboration.
