June 2006
The general opinion seemed to be that The Master and Margarita was an enjoyable read - even though a couple of us were a little scared we hadn't quite 'got the point' of the novel.

As ever, after staring at each other blankly for a moment the titles and authors started pouring forth for next month's read. We arrived at Cold Comfort Farm (Stella Gibbons) by way of Orwell, Ballard, Lord of the Flies and Edith Wharton. We were variously restricted at different points in the conversation by length, gender of author (had to be female) and price (Wordsworth Classics for a quid sounded popular!).

Sadly I don't think this is a £1 classic. That was 'Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde'. Another £8 Penguin I'm afraid.
Would just like to say what a good time I had the other night. As a Beerandbooks virgin it was a top evening. Looking forward to the next one
Yes, I also had a great time, and look forward to next month's edition (especially as we've got such a top book to discuss). Since I started off the idea of saying what you've been reading this month, I guess that i really should contribute to the list. So here's what I've been reading this month. For some reason I've been reading a lot about Russia - actually these books work quite well as a set. Didn't notice that until just now...
People’s Republic of Love
An almost true story about what happened in the villages of Siberia in about 1920 when there were white Russians, Germans, Czechs and communists all wandering around the region.
Wolves Eat Dogs by Martin Cruz
This is set in the ‘dead zone’ around Chernobyl, which gives the whole thing an exotic and ghostly air (plus being very interesting on the subject of the new Russia)
A short history of tractors in Ukrainian
Give this to your mother. She'll love it.
Long Walk to Freedom
The the true story of a group of prisoners in World War II who escape in Siberia and then walk (without shoes, supplies or money) all the way through Siberia, the Gobi Desert and the Himalayas to reach India and freedom.
The Historian
A novel about vampires. Slow to start, but satisfyingly scary once it gets going.
